People can call 911 again. 

Phone and internet service from Verizon and Charter/Spectrum were restored Tuesday afternoon after the Spring Creek Fire near Fort Garland knocked it out for roughly four days, beginning Friday afternoon.

Meryl Tolsma of The Alliance recently announced the start of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program in Chaffee County.

Tolsma, who is the Chaffee County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) coordinator, said at this point five local nurses have volunteered to train for the program, and one of them has already finished the training.

The program provides a SANE to examine a sexual assault survivor and collect evidence.

Chaffee County commissioners scheduled a special meeting at 1 p.m. March 1 to continue discussion of an appeal to a limited impact review for a solar energy garden from Oak Leaf Energy Partners.

Commissioners made the decision following a public hearing at their Tuesday meeting because they said they needed more time to study the matter, which involves 12 acres on the northeast corner of U.S. 285 and CR 140.

Central Colorado Conservancy sponsored a meeting of the Arkansas Headwaters Wetland Focus Area Team Jan. 26 in Poncha Springs to discuss wetland and riparian restoration opportunities in 10 areas of Lake and Chaffee counties.

Poncha Springs trustees moved forward on the town’s water infrastructure project Monday as they voted unanimously to approve a loan from the Colorado Water Resources and Power Development Authority (CWRPDA) and to accept a bid for work on the water trunk line.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo expanded its estimate of drought-affected areas in Colorado Thursday to include extreme southwestern Chaffee County in the D1 – moderate drought category.

The rest of Chaffee county is listed as D0 – abnormally dry.

Colorado Mountain Club will host the 2018 Backcountry Film Fest at 7 p.m. Saturday at Salida SteamPlant, 220 W. Sackett Ave.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and Colorado Mountain Club staff will introduce themselves and highlight the organization’s programs, including their trail maintenance and stewardship work in Salida and across the state.
