Students and faculty from Colorado College hiked through Railroad Gulch in Browns Canyon National Monument Friday as part of their watershed education.

Colorado College’s State of the Rockies program takes a particular focus every couple of years. Its previous theme was large landscape conservation, and this year the program is teaching its students about “Scales of Western Water.”

Friends of Browns Canyon members Michael Kunkel and Reed Dils, who are also longtime advocates for making the area a national monument, guided the 20 students and faculty across the Arkansas River at Hecla Junction and up Railroad Gulch.
