Jared Michael “Jeb” Rathbone

Jared Michael “Jeb” Rathbone, 40, died May 9, 2017, in Gunnison.

He had struggled with severe Type I diabetes for several years.

He was born Feb. 4, 1977, in Wichita, Kan., to Michael Rathbone and Susan Reiff Rathbone (now Brown).

Mr. Rathbone was raised in Wichita and graduated from Kapaun-Mount Carmel High School in 1995.

He then attended Kansas University.

Friends and family said he was a very good athlete and an avid outdoorsman.

He enjoyed tennis, golf and fishing.

His love of the mountains, especially snowboarding, prompted him to move to Colorado in 2016, where was employed by Crested Butte Mountain Ski Resort.

Mr. Rathbone was a fan of Kansas University football and basketball and never missed a game.

He also loved a good book and enjoyed the Rathbone Family Book Club, texting back and forth with his sisters and brother about book ideas.

He was a kind and loving person and had a special ability with children.

Friends and family said he was well liked by all who knew him and that his special love was his family. They said he will be so missed by all who knew him and especially by his family.

Survivors include his father; mother; stepfather, Hal Brown; sisters, Molly (Peter) Maxwell and Susanna (Mike) Jones; brother, Joel Rathbone; cousin Cindy Reiff George; nephew, Quin Maxwell; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

His memorial service will be at 10 a.m. May 22, 2017, at Downing & Lahey Funeral Home, 6555 E Central Ave, Wichita.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at Mercy and Truth Medical Missions, 721 N. 31st St., Kansas City, KS, 66102.

Arrangements were with Downing & Lahey Funeral Home of Wichita.
