Former Salida resident Lynn Petrillo, 77, died Jan. 30, 2017, in Sisters, Ore., from complications of dementia.
She was born July 7, 1939, in Jersey City, N.J., and grew up in Maywood, N.J.
Miss Petrillo graduated from Gettysburg College then worked for the Red Cross/ U.S. Army in Germany, where she learned to ski. She then worked in Korea and Japan.
In 1966, she moved to Colorado to get her teaching certificate from the University of Northern Colorado.
She lived and taught school in Steamboat Springs. She taught sixth grade and fourth grade for a total of six years, then taught art in the elementary school for 20 years.
In 1998, while searching for a location that had the beauty of the mountains while not having the harsh winters of Steamboat, she relocated to Salida. Her friends in both communities became her extended family.
In 2015 she moved to Melbourne, Fla., for a year, then to Bend, Ore., in spring 2016, with her final move to Sisters in November.
Besides being a gifted artist and being active in her community, her other loves included traveling, snow skiing, camping, hiking, mountain bike riding, swimming and reading.
Friends and family said most of all she loved her dogs.
Survivors include siblings Janice Sienesi, Michael Petrillo, Danette Bialous and Glennis Bunch; and nieces, nephews and numerous other extended family and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to an animal shelter of the donor’s choice.
