It didn’t take long for the Salida High School girls’ basketball team to establish their presence Thursday in the Centauri Mountain Top Classic tournament.

The Lady Spartans bolted out of the gates to start the season, defeating the Las Animas Lady Trojans 81-23.

All 12 Lady Spartan players scored in the game.

Salida (1-0) led the entire game and went on a 26-3 run in the first quarter and never looked back.

Stifling defense and dominating the boards allowed the Lady Spartans to keep the momentum in their favor and kept the Lady Trojans (0-1) on their heels.

The Lady Spartans outrebounded the Lady Trojans 48-26, and that helped grow the lead to 46-7 at halftime.

The Salida girls played steady the rest of the game, scoring 17 in the third quarter and 18 in the final quarter while giving up 16 points the rest of the game.

Sophomore Tyler Kaess scored a game-high 17 points for the Lady Spartans. Sophomore Bailey Golden added 14, and sophomore Alejandra Godina finished with 12 points for Salida.

The Lady Spartans play at 5:30 p.m. today at Centauri Middle School against the winner of Center versus Centauri.
