Former Chaffee County Commissioner Ronald Jacob Ours Sr., 79, of Salida died Dec. 7, 2013, at his home.

He was born in 1934 at home in Pulaski Township, Pa., to Jacob and Dorothy Ours.

Mr. Ours graduated from New Brighton High School in 1952 and served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956, rising to the rank of sergeant.

He trained and served as a helicopter and jet fighter mechanic.

He met his wife, Gloria, while stationed at Geiger Field in Spokane, Wash.

They were married at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Spokane in 1956 and settled in Western Pennsylvania, where he worked with his dad in the family heavy truck sales and truck parts business.

In fall 1967 the Ourses moved to Loveland, where he owned his own truck sales business.

In spring 1970 the family moved to Salida, where Mr. Ours continued in the truck sales and repair business.

He later worked in sales with Center Motor Car Co. in Center, retiring in 2006.

Mr. Ours enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and hiking in the nearby mountains and fishing on the Arkansas River and at local lakes, streams and reservoirs.

He also enjoyed road travel, making a number of family trips over the years to visit relatives around the country.

Mr. Ours was civically active throughout his life, serving as a captain with the Daugherty Township Volunteer Fire Department in Beaver County, Pa., in the 1960s.

He was elected as a Chaffee County commissioner in November 1984, serving from January 1985 to January 1989.

He was a past commander of Ray Lines American Legion Post No. 64, where he served on the Boys State and Memorial Day Parade committees; a member of the Knights of Columbus; and a past member of Salida Sertoma Club.

Mrs. Ours was preceded in death by his parents; sister Carol Ours; sister-in-law Gail Ours; and brother-in-law M. Ray Spurlock.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Ronald J. (Tammy) Ours Jr. of Denver and the Rev. Donald Ours of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Annette (Brian) Cates of Centennial and Shauna (Scott) Paulson of Golden; grandchildren, Brianna (Kevin) Clerkin, Michael Cates, Emily Cates, Ronald Jacob “Jake” Ours III, Audrey Ours, Erik (Carissa) Paulson, Brian (Kristen) Paulson and Katy Paulson; great-grandchildren, Dylan Clerkin, Mallory Clerkin and Elyse Paulson; sister Cheryl (Cliff) Belkowski; brothers, Robert (Joan) Ours and Dean (Karen) Ours, all of Pennsylvania; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Marian Spurlock, Ronald Christensen, Charles L. Robb and Debra (Vincent) Gongora of Utah; and many nieces, nephews and extended family throughout the U.S.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 14, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salida, preceded by recitation of the rosary at 10 a.m.
