The 21st annual Headwaters Institute, an all-day workshop for the public and for first-year river guides, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Salida Rotary Scout Hut, 210 E. Sackett Ave.

The Arkansas River Outfitters Association, Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area and the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association host the workshop.

Lectures and break-out sessions will be presented by several local and regional experts. Topics include current issues in local fire ecology, geology of the Arkansas Valley, stream ecology, the effects of global climate change on the Arkansas, wildlife along the river and current public lands issues.

Cost for the public is $20 and includes a picnic lunch and an after-party with pizza and beer sponsored by Moonlight Pizza and Soulcraft Brewing.

Fees for the event support stewardship initiatives in the Upper Arkansas Valley, according to a press release.

If special assistance is required, call the GARNA office, 719-539-5106, or email a few days in advance so accommodations can be made. Office hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
