Salida restaurant a special treat Dear Editor:
I feel God always takes us where we need to be, if only we listen.
It isn't any wonder I have found a new home working for Angel of Shavano Hospice.
But, the real story is my mother raised six kids as a single parent on 25 cents per hour from the early 1950s until the early 1970s. Yes, we were very poor.
Even at that, she took an amazing risk and opened her own restaurant - she was a great cook on a budget. The three youngest of us were still at home.
My job at age 11 was to wash the dishes. I wasn't tall enough to reach the large stainless steel sinks so mom took metal coffee cans turned them upside down and tied them on my feet with string.
Now, many years later, my mom has been diagnosed with a life limiting illness. She happened to see Kurt Boucher on the "Iron Chef" challenge and wanted very much to experience his food and style.
On Mother's Day, I was able to make that possible for her. We had an extraordinary meal, staff members were professional, the display amazing - all that mom would expect from a professional.
But, beyond that, Kurt came to the table, his staff took our picture and signed the menu. This man probably made a dream come true for a wonderful woman whose days are now numbered.
Thank you, Kurt, for doing a wonderful thing.
