Salida girls varsity basketball players eliminated the La Junta Tigers from Tri-Peaks District playoffs with a 61-50 win Saturday in Andreas Field House.
La Junta and Salida played a pigtail game to secure the winner in bracket seeding. Salida will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Academy. Salida boys play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at home against TCA.
Spartan girls controlled the game Saturday, never letting the lead slip to the Tigers with a first quarter performance holding La Junta players to three points and a halftime lead of 25-20.
Spartans had a good third quarter with 19 points compared to 11 by the Tigers. Going into the fourth quarter 44-31 in favor of the Spartans, La Junta couldn't overcome the deficit setting the final score at 61-50.
Junior Megan Granzella led Spartans with 19 points including four, three-point baskets. Salida junior Sammi Gentile scored 13 points and sophomore Morgan Gentile picked up seven. Ten Spartan girls scored against the Lady Tigers.
Spartan girls are approaching post-season games as they would any other Salida junior Megan Granzella, said.
"We're not really changing anything, we're just trying to perfect (our offense and defense)," Granzella said.
