With budget cuts and dwindling sales tax revenue, a reduced overlay or rebuild project for city streets was discussed by Salida City Councilmen and personnel Tuesday during a work session.
Robert Vance, public works director, said the project would need to go out to bid at the beginning of August so crews can work through September before winter.
City personnel originally budgeted $650,000 for a Sackett Avenue rebuild including water, sewer, curb and gutter and new asphalt.
In May, however, city council approved an amended budget, leaving $438,425 for a street project.
Vance discussed rebuilding Sackett Avenue from L to I streets, which would cost an estimated $441,672.
Another option under the reduced budget would be to overlay streets in need.
Vance said a mile of overlay costs approximately $110,473, he said.
Streets listed as in need include:
Sackett Avenue from F to C streets.
C Street from Sackett to Colo. 291.
Sackett from L to F streets.
H Street from U.S. 50 to Sackett.
Crestone Avenue from L to Poncha Boulevard.
Park Place from Poncha to Crestone Avenue.
Dodge Street from Teller to Colo. 291.
Shavano Avenue from Grant to Crestone streets.
Caldwell Avenue from Illinois to Park avenues.
Park Avenue from Grant Street to Poncha Boulevard.
C Street from Fourth Street to Park Avenue.
Vance said since 2008, 17 of 36 miles of city streets have had an overlay or chip seal, and reminded councilmen residents voted for 2A for city infrastructure and roads.
Councilman Jim McCormick said personnel should look into a chip seal project this year rather than overlay.
Vance said city streets should be chip sealed every five years, which costs about $40,000 per mile.
