Poncha Springs Trustees agreed to write a letter of support regarding the Salida geothermal study in Poncha Springs Monday during their regular meeting.
Salida officials asked the town to write the letter for a Governor's Energy Office grant to research geothermal potential at Salida-owned Poncha Hot Springs. The grant application deadline is May 23.
Town administrator Jerry L'Estrange said, "I think anything that benefits geothermal exploration in our area could be beneficial."
Trustees Rick Roberts and Galen Angelo verbally agreed, and board members directed staff personnel to write the letter.
On another topic, trustees unanimously approved a fairgrounds lease agreement with Chaffee County. Trustees previously delayed agreeing to the lease after staff personnel voiced worry about not receiving sales tax from events at the fairgrounds.
New language in the 25-year lease states county officials will advise town personnel or fairground users conducting events or activities and selling products that users may be subject to the town's sales tax.
The town will be responsible for collecting any sales tax due.
With town sales tax revenue down 17 percent from February, L'Estrange said he hopes summer activities increase revenue.
