Leadville woman concerned about missing grandson

by Ann E. Wibbenmeyer Leadville Herald Democrat

The last time Christine Mott spoke to her 6-year-old grandson was Monday, the day before his mother - Mott's daughter - was detained for investigation of conspiracy to commit murder.

Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, 31, taken into custody March 12 in Ireland, was apparently released without charges. The conspiracy was allegedly to kill Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks who portrayed the Prophet Mohammed as a dog.

Since those events, Mott said she has been speaking with news organizations throughout the nation.

"It's not about Jamie," she said Tuesday. "It's about Christian. It's about a 6-year-old boy who never had a chance to have a choice in what happened to him."

Paulin-Ramirez left Leadville with Christian Carreon, then 5, for Denver Sept. 11 reportedly to meet an unknown friend. They never returned.

Mott reported Paulin-Ramirez missing Sept. 15. She told Leadville authorities Ramirez left Leadville in a recently purchased white 2005 Pontiac Bonneville.

The vehicle, which still had a temporary license, was located Sept. 29 in a parking lot at Denver International Airport.

Oct. 6 Mott told local officers she had been contacted by her daughter, who was in Ireland by then. Earlier, all attempts to call Ramirez were unsuccessful and her voice mail box was reportedly full.

Before leaving Leadville, Paulin-Ramirez reportedly talked online with Muslims, the faith to which she converted. Mott reported Paulin-Ramirez had begun to wear black scarves to cover her face before leaving Leadville.

Mott described her daughter as lonely and looking for someone to love her.

The Muslim man she met via the Internet and subsequently married doesn't love her, Mott said.

"They came into my home and ripped my family apart," Mott said regarding the online conversations.

The family arrived in Leadville during December 2007. Paulin-Ramirez was the first to arrive when she took a job at Vail Valley Medical Center. Mott and her husband followed Paulin-Ramirez to town.

Christian attended kindergarten two weeks before his mother took him to Ireland. He didn't want to go, Mott said.
