Visitors read to children

Guest readers are visiting Salida Early Childhood Development Center daily in November to support National Family Literacy month.
Samantha Barron, family service coordinator, said literacy is "the number one indicator of childhood success."
Not only are parents encouraged to read to their children, Barron said, but parents should also read to themselves.
"It's important for parents to set an example and for kids to see their parents engaged in a book," she said.
Salida Mayor Chuck Rose read "Make Way for Ducklings" by Robert McClaskey Monday. The book was published in 1941 and won the Caldecott medal in 1942.
"It's one of the first books I remember," Rose said.
Having guest readers, Barron said, exposes students to different kinds of books, creating diversity that's been "really fun."
Students are creating a "bookapillar." Each time a parent reads a book to their child, the student may add a segment to the bookapillar with the title of the book, Barron said.
Salida Regional Library personnel visited with students and their families to set up library cards.
"As a kid, my mom would come home with a stack of books from the library every week for us," Rose said.
Reading is an "engaging medium rather than a passing medium" he said, and can broaden a child's view of the world without traveling.
Other guest readers include Salida Police Chief Terry Clark, fire department personnel and parents.
