Raft Masters teams ride to rodeo glory
Kevin Hoffman Mail Staff Writer
Raft Masters guides of Cañon City lived up to their namesake after they secured first and third places in the FIBArk Raft Rodeo competition Thursday in the upper playhole of the Salida Whitewater Park.
Creative flips and swims scored points with judges as, one at a time, each raft team tried to impress the audience. After the preliminary round six crews among about 20 raft team entries in the event continued to participate in a free-for-all.
Team Up in Ya took first place with a two-man Raft Masters combo of Will Colon and a paddler identified as B.L. The Up in Ya routine ended after Will Colon left the raft and B.L. single-handedly steered back into the wave.
In second place, Dane Jackson and Jason Craig, who normally compete in freestyle kayaking, drew the attention of the audience during the free-for-all when failed attempts at pirating resulted in flips.
The Man-Bear-Pig team, headed up by Raft Masters guides Matt Colon and Dylan Riskie, took third after they nearly accomplished a front flip.
Prizes went to the top three competitors - $100 for first, $50 for second and $25 for third. Winners also received FIBArk Champion belt buckles for the winners.
