Doug Bennetts, 57, a retired and well known Buena Vista High School teacher and coach, died Tuesday.

He began teaching in Buena Vista in 1977 and retired in May 2007. He taught industrial arts and coached wrestling before his retirement.

School officials cancelled school Friday to allow staff and students to attend funeral services.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Buena Vista High School physical education complex. Mass will be at 4 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

The Buena Vista High School wrestling match set for today has been canceled as has a middle school girls' basketball game.

Buena Vista High School basketball games scheduled Friday will be played.

The high school pep rally set for Friday has been postponed to next week and the National Honor Society dance was canceled, school officials said.

Bennetts was elk hunting on his property Tuesday with a group of hunters, Randy Amettis, Chaffee County Coroner reported. After shooting an elk, the group returned to the Bennetts home for a tractor when he collapsed.

Bennetts was transported to Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida were he was pronounced dead.
