Salida Middle School student Amy Adams place 15th at the national Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen contest.

The eighth-grader won the state competition in Denver in January with her essay on “Why I Honor the American Flag.”

That win qualified her to move on to the national event.

It was Adams’ first entry in an essay contest.

“It’s definitely an opportunity I won’t forget, and I’m grateful to members of the VFW for presenting it to my school. Through this contest, I met some awesome people and had great support,” Adams said.
