The Mountain Mail, June 11, 1969:

At mid-morning today, there were two snowplows on Monarch Pass. But they weren’t doing anything about clearing the snow from the road. They couldn’t get through the stalled cars.

The radio at the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office was running wild as patrolmen and highway crews attempted to clear the traffic so the trucks could resume their duties.
