The Mountain Mail, June 13, 1994:

Salida High School sophomore Nicole Zielinko was selected to join the World Sports Exchange in Sydney, Australia, Aug. 7-17 as one of 60 student athletes from the United States.

The highlight of the 10 days is a 15 km. “City to Surf Race,” the largest distance race in the world, according to WSE materials.

Typically, 40,000 runners from around the world participate in the run, which starts in Sydney and finishes along the shores of the Tasman Sea.

Zielinko was recommended by one of 12 American coaches invited to the event, which includes daily clinics and cultural tours. Not one of those coaches is from Colorado, and Zielinko’s father, Tony, said they can’t find out who recommended her.
