The Mountain Mail, June 13, 1969:

When the cars begin lining up along Hwy. 50 east of Salida this Saturday, it will tell the story of just how appealing the Bear Creek Slaloms are to passing tourists.

Each year, one week before the running of the Arkansas River Downriver Boat Race, boaters converge on a 20-gate slalom course set up in the rough waters surrounding the juncture of Bear Creek and the Arkansas River.

The course issues a challenge in itself and also serves the second purpose of preparing the boaters for the slalom competition during the big weekend which is to follow.
