The Salida Daily Mail, June 14, 1944:

A triple tragedy was narrowly averted yesterday when Mrs. Harry E. Miller chanced to hear feeble cries for help coming from the home of her next door neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer E. Cooper, 1302 F Street.

Mr. Cooper was on his back porch so weak that he could scarcely walk or talk. He asked Mrs. Miller to call a doctor.

After placing the call, Mrs. Miller went to the Cooper home. She found Mrs. Cooper unconscious in a chair, and Mr. Cooper semi-conscious.

An ambulance was called and Mr. and Mrs. Cooper were taken to the Rio Grande Hospital.
